Do You Like You?

I had a good friend text me today with the message that people suck. Sometimes, that is exactly right. She was betrayed by someone she thought was a good friend. After hearing what happened, I felt icky, like I needed a shower and maybe even some colon cleansing pills. Sometimes, when I hear about the mean things people do to each other, it makes me angry. Today, it made me sad - sad for my friend and for the person who did it. She probably does not even know what friendship really is.

Shortly after hearing this I saw a quotation from Eleanor Roosevelt: "Friendship with oneself is all-important, because without it one cannot be friends with anyone else in the world." It made me realize that this person probably does not even like herself very much.

Ya know, I had a friend for 50+ years, and a couple years ago something happened that destroyed my trust in her. I was very sad that she showed a side I didn't know, but I'm comfortable enough with myself that, after a few philosophical days, I was able to say "It is what it is," and let it go. Yeah, I do like me. I like me well enough to let go when it isn't a good relationship.
